Kinja'd!!!

Remember the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I reviewed a while back? The rental car I was using while the Miata was in the shop? I bought it. For $4500. Here’s what my money got me:

Kinja'd!!!

An car. In this case a base model 2005 Mustang V6 Convertible. Options ticked consist of ABS/Traction and the optional spoiler, as it originally began life as a rental car in Florida.

Kinja'd!!!

Air dam trim piece thing that’s falling off (going to do a Mach 1 style front spoiler out of garden edging, as many people do)

Kinja'd!!!

Obvious air rifle misshap

Kinja'd!!!

Obvious poor repaint

Kinja'd!!!

Scratches and swirled-to-shit paint. Going to have it buffed after hitting some spots with touch-up paint to at least make the fucker one color.

Kinja'd!!!

So much brake dust. It’s insane. These pads are godawful.

Kinja'd!!!

A door.

Kinja'd!!!

An interior.

Kinja'd!!!

Another door, and a well-worn steering wheel and automatic shifter I shall be replacing with their leather-and-aluminum GT variants.

Kinja'd!!!

Shitty Chinese head unit I will be replacing with a Pioneer double-DIN non-touchscreen because fuck touchscreens in cars.

Kinja'd!!!

And lastly, a donkey.

My plans for this car are to leave it mechanically stock, fix any minor things wrong with it (at this point it looks like strut mounts, a couple interior bits and bobs, and paintwork), freshen up the interior with a few new/updated/less worn-out parts then look at reselling it when convertible season hits us again for a profit. I still have the Miata, though with a bent subframe it’s not going to be driving any time soon, but it will be driving again, hopefully before this coming summer and the autocross season. I have not decided what direction to take the Miata modification-wise after its curb-hopping pole-hugging incident. Current options are to keep on with making it a nice daily driver or to strip it out and go full racecar, which would be nice but it has a perfectly serviceable interior and I’d hate to ruin it when there are so many shitbox Miatas already out there.

Anyways, that’s my Mustang. Always made fun of V6 Mustang owners, now I have one. Go figure.

If it was a manual coupe I’d never think of selling it. The auto is pretty fun and I think it would be great as a couple-hundred-pounds-lighter coupe that you can row your own. I have never been much of a mustang guy but this car hits the sweet spot for me as far as power/handling/comfort/modernness/cheapness. A blue manual V6 coupe is now fairly high on my wishlist.

Which dash panels? An interior color conversion would be... interesting, though I doubt it would be worth it. I’d love to have the brushed-metal-looking dash parts. Like this.

Swap leather seats in, those cloth seats are gross.

Also, it started as a rental car in Florida and then became a rental car in not Florida? Who rents out cars that old?

It’s awful. The wheel is even worse. Fortunately the shifter is broken (the indicator doesn’t move) and the wheel is worn to the point of crumbling where it was held, so I’m going to buy rough-but-better aluminum Mustang GT parts from eBay for $100 apiece, which is basically the entire “Sport Appearance Package” so... yay upgrade!

Honestly the seats aren’t awful, and I don’t think I can justify the insane cost of leather seats.

It was a rental car in Florida, then it was traded in to the dealership I work out where they said “take that piece of shit” when I needed something to drive after wrecking the Miata.

130,000. This is the most powerful, fastest, heaviest, newest, lowest-mileage car I’ve ever owned. I actually really like the transmission in this. It shifts nicer than the 2008 Corvette I test-drove last month. And it’s tons of fun to say “it has a truck motor” in it (4.0L Cologne V6 previously only used in Explorers and Rangers and such). The noise isn’t bad, either.

A warning: Insurance is pricey and fuel economy is pretty bad. I got 17 on my last tank and I drive about 60/40 city/highway.

The Cologne V6 from the 90's at least was durable as fuck. Kinda like the 4.6 V8 but slower and uglyer sounding.

I far prefer the Cologne V6 to the 4.6 simply because it’s a much better platform and I utterly hate 90 degree V8s. They are stupid durable, though. I laughed pretty hard when my bank tried to make me get a powertrain warranty.

But the sex noises from the 4.6 are so mhmmmmmm.

The 0-60 in the Exploder from the 90's was like 11.1 seconds or something, so hopefully it isn’t that slow.

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, the Mustang GT does make a really nice noise. I wish they weren’t so godawful expensive for what they are.

Supposedly my car does 0-60 in under 7 seconds. It’s very likely in need of a tuneup. I need to hook up an OBD scanner and see if it’s pulling any timing due to knock and get an idea of what maintenance/tuneup items need done.

We can rebuilt it. We have the technology. I can correct for the camber with some aftermarket parts usually made for the hella of flushness and compensate for the bent subframe. Then it’s just a matter of aligning it and finding some new wheels.

Just finished installing mine. Damn, I just have the four-speaker system but it sounds damn good if you fiddle with the equalizer and such. It sounded like ass ‘till I realized the equalizer on my phone was enabled. Gets impressive amounts of clean bass out of those itty bitty speakers as long as you’re careful about how you set up the head unit.

I already bought a salvage yard spindle and LCA for $90, now just another $120 for custom extended ball joints to compensate for the positive camber caused by the bent frame and I should be able to align it within spec.

Nah. Only car I’ve successfully flipped was my Civic. I mostly own cars for the fun of owning cars rather than making a profit. Cries of “but that won’t raise the resale value!” always get thrown at me when I do things for my own benefit.

I hear you. I’ve tried flipping but it usually ends in me losing money because I want to make every car perfect. Not to mention the stress. It’s definitely way more fun to just drive cars that interest you.

Yeah man, I’ve got 8 speakers in the Milan (which is insane in itself) but I’ve also had systems as big as 2 10" subs.

This thing powering my 8 speakers puts out IMPRESSIVE bass. It’s enough that subs are not needed in my situation and that’s perfect for me...as I’ve done enough damage to my ears with those 10's lol.

My 2005 replete with auto, supercharger, and suspension bits weighs - get this - FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS LESS than a friend’s 2006 V6 convertible. He went all in. Leather, shaker 1000, interior upgrade, and heaven knows what else. I think that was with his gigantic aftermarket wheels as well.

Me? Base CLOTH interior, base stereo, spoiler delete. Heck my door panels are 100% plastic. I don’t have to worry about those cloth inserts that separate on EVERY SINGLE ONE that has them.
